Which type of Discord name do you need?
Choose the type that matches what you are naming. Check username availability directly in Discord. The requirements below follow Discord’s identity and server documentation. Compare them with Twitch, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram in the username rules by platform.
Username
Your unique account name, shared so people can add you as a friend or find your profile. 2–32 characters. Unaccented letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), underscores (_) and periods (.) are allowed. Usernames appear in lowercase.
Display name
The public name people see by default, unless a nickname set in Discord takes its place. 1–32 characters. Uppercase letters, accents, other scripts, symbols, spaces and emoji are allowed.
Server name
The name of the Discord community itself. Discord allows 2–100 characters. Suggestions stay under 32 characters to keep them readable in the server list.
What makes a good Discord name?
Choose a name people can read quickly and recognize across conversations. The username ideas guide helps you compare names beyond Discord’s format requirements.
Readable in chat
In a busy chat, people need to recognize your name quickly. If it is hard to read aloud, shorten it or remove a symbol.
Easy to recognize
Keep a recognizable base or sound across servers for your account. For a server, choose a name that clearly suggests the topic or group.
Suited to the server
A competitive name may feel out of place in a study server. Look at the tone, channels and members before choosing your name.
Keep symbols simple
Symbols can make a name harder to read. For a username, a well-placed period or underscore is usually easier to recognize than a long decoration.
What if your Discord username is taken?
A username must be unique. A display name can be shared by several people. If your username is taken, keep its base and change one detail, or explore more username ideas by style and use.
Keep your variation readable
If your first choice is taken, keep the base and change the ending. Check that the new version still reads naturally.
Use periods and underscores sparingly
A period or underscore can separate two readable parts. Repeating them makes a username harder to remember.
Try a more personal variation
Use From a starting word with your name, current username or a word that fits you. This gives you more directions to explore than adding numbers.
How to change your name on Discord
Your username
On desktop, open User Settings, then My Account, and edit your username. On mobile, open your profile, then Account and Username. See the steps in Discord’s help center.
Your display name
Open your profile settings to change your display name. You can change it without changing your username. If your old name still appears in a server, check your nickname for that server. Read about display names.
Your server nickname
On desktop, right-click your avatar in a message and edit your server profile. Your nickname replaces your display name in that server. Your role needs permission to change nicknames. Change a server nickname.
